If you’re looking to break into the world of hospitality in Western Australia, there’s one essential credential you’ll need before you can start pouring drinks, working behind the bar or serving alcoholic beverages in a restaurant — your RSA.
What is an RSA?
An RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate is more than just a formality. It’s a nationally accredited course that teaches you how to serve alcohol safely, understand your legal responsibilities, and protect both yourself and your customers. And in WA, it’s a mandatory requirement for anyone involved in the sale, supply, or service of liquor at a licensed venue. This includes everything from food and beverage attendants to winery cellar door staff.
How do I get one?
Getting your RSA is straightforward — and you can do it entirely online, at your own pace. The Australian Hotels Association (WA) offers a nationally accredited RSA course (SITHFAB021) that meets all WA legal requirements. It’s recognised across Australia and specifically tailored to WA’s liquor laws, so it’s a great choice whether you’re already here or planning a move from interstate.
The AHA(WA) course is self-paced and flexible, meaning you can knock it over in a few hours and start applying for jobs right away. It’s designed with real-world hospitality in mind, making it one of the most respected RSA qualifications you can get in WA.
If you’re coming from interstate and already hold an RSA, you may still need to complete the WA-approved course. Not all online RSAs from other states meet the requirements under WA’s Liquor Control Act, so it’s worth checking before you apply for jobs.
Why do it?
Once you’ve completed your RSA successfully, you will receive a certificate that proves you’re qualified to work in licensed venues such as bars, pubs, hotels, restaurants, and even at events and festivals.
For a small investment of time and money, an RSA can unlock a wide range of job opportunities across WA’s thriving hospitality industry — from Broome to Busselton, Perth to the Pilbara.
Where else can I do an RSA?
You might also find RSA courses through your local TAFE or other online training providers. Just make sure they’re properly registered and that the course meets WA’s legal requirements.
