The leader’s role in a healthy hospitality culture

June 11, 2025

The tourism and hospitality industry runs on people. From chefs to waitstaff, baristas to front desk teams, it’s the energy and attitude of your team that shapes the customer experience. But behind the smiles and service, hospitality can be tough and mental health challenges are common.

As a leader, your role goes beyond rosters and revenue. You help shape the environment your team works in every day. And that environment plays a huge role in whether your staff feel valued, supported and safe — or stressed, burnt out and ready to leave.

High staff turnover, tension between team members, and poor performance often have a shared root: unaddressed mental strain. If your team is constantly under pressure, facing customer abuse, working inconsistent hours or feeling unsupported, it’s going to show. And it’s your responsibility to notice.

Leading with empathy

Prioritising mental wellbeing isn’t about being a counsellor. It’s about leading with empathy. That might mean checking in regularly, encouraging open conversations, or creating clear boundaries around workload and behaviour. It means taking bullying and harassment seriously, and making space for people to raise issues without fear.

It also means leading by example, managing your own stress, acknowledging when you need a break, and promoting a culture that values people, not just performance.

When teams feel psychologically safe and supported, they’re more engaged, more resilient and more likely to stick around. A positive workplace culture improves staff wellbeing as well as improving customer experience, reputation and results.

It’s not always easy, especially in an industry built on long hours and high expectations. But making team wellbeing a priority is one of the most powerful things you can do as a leader.
