Six practical steps to get summer job ready

October 15, 2025

Western Australia’s tourism and hospitality industry is booming, and summer is the ideal time to gain experience, build your network and advance your career. Whether you’re starting out, adding to your skill set or seeking a more permanent or senior role, there are opportunities for everyone.

Roles are diverse. You could work as a tour guide welcoming visitors to landmarks and attractions, or share culture and stories in Aboriginal tourism. Food and beverage positions include front-of-house and behind-the-scenes roles in cafés, bars and restaurants. There are also opportunities in hotels, events, attractions and transport, as well as management and trainee roles.

Here’s how to prepare to secure a role:

1. Get your RSA

Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) is mandatory for roles serving or selling alcohol in licensed venues such as pubs, bars and restaurants. Completing the course opens doors to casual, seasonal and permanent positions. You can do the course at 16, but WA law means you cannot serve or sell alcohol until 18. To find out more, visit our web page on training courses.

2. Update your resume

Tailor your resume to the role you want and keep it clean, clear and concise. If you haven’t held a job before, include work experience, volunteer roles or school projects. Highlight teamwork, reliability and customer service skills. For senior or management positions, emphasise leadership and problem-solving abilities.

3. Practise your interview

Confidence is key. Practise answering common questions, introducing yourself and discussing your experience. Be ready to talk about your strengths, areas for growth and examples of challenges you’ve overcome. A positive, enthusiastic attitude helps you stand out.

4. Look the part for interviews

First impressions matter. Ensure your grooming, attire and overall presentation are neat and professional. Smart but comfortable clothing helps you feel confident. For senior roles, polished attire and confident body language create a strong impression.

5. Be flexible and proactive

Track the roles you apply for, follow up on applications and be ready for interviews on short notice. Showing flexibility and a willingness to attend with little advance warning demonstrates commitment and reliability to potential employers.

6. Find your role

Start with our job listings page for casual, seasonal and permanent opportunities. Check social media and consider walking into venues with your resume. Letting your family and friends know you are looking for work can also uncover hidden opportunities.

By following these six steps, you’ll boost your chances of securing a summer job in WA’s tourism and hospitality industry. Preparation and confidence are your best tools to stand out and get hired. Good luck!
