Golden Outback

Golden Outback

Western Australia’s golden outback stretches far — it covers just over half of Western Australia. From the rugged red north to the jewel of the pristine southern coast, Esperance. From the historic outback goldfields of the east, to the charming farm stays and spectacular wildflowers of the western wheatbelt.

Experience other worldly landscapes from dazzling salt lakes and sweeping outback plains, to rugged rocky outcrops and wildlife-filled woodlands. And in Spring, watch wildflowers found nowhere else on Earth bloom to life as the warm weather shifts across the region.

Hit the road less travelled to discover spooky ghost towns, true outback pubs, and a tin horse highway — this is road trip country! In Esperance, witness a bubble gum pink lake and discover Australia’s whitest beach. Walk in the world’s largest outdoor art gallery at Lake Ballard or surf one of Australia’s biggest inland ‘waves’ at Wave Rock. See epic modern mining or step back in time to learn about early Gold Rush life in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Explore the region

The Wheatbelt is the third most populous region in the State, with a diverse landscape across its subregions from the pristine white beaches and clear turquoise waters of Cervantes and Jurien Bay, to rolling hills and winding streams in the Avon Valley, to the rugged and magnificent terrain along the Wheatbelt Way.  Located in close proximity to Perth, the Wheatbelt region is intersection by numerous key transport routes and adjoins 5 other regions and the Perth Metropolitan Area.

Agriculture and mining are the region’s main revenue earners. The Wheatbelt’s agricultural industry is the state’s main producer of cereal crops and contributes to other products such as canola, olives, vegetables, wine grapes, honey, citrus fruits and livestock. While agriculture remains the dominant industry, the economy is also supported by mining, commerce, retail, manufacturing, fishing and tourism.

The Western Australian Wheatbelt is home to the world-famous Wave Rock near Hyden, the most recognised tourist attraction in the region. Visitors and locals can also enjoy character townships, miles of golden fields, charming rural farms and great outback self-drive adventures. Experience the very best of the region’s country charm and rich pioneering history by visiting the outback pubs, exploring quaint main streets and meeting friendly locals.  Stay at one of the many farm stays, where you can cuddle the cute farmyard animals and enjoy good home-cooked food and deliciously fresh local produce, from wines and preserves to olive oil and yabbies.

Explore Western Australia’s Golden Outback from the dynamic modern mining hub of Kalgoorlie, Australia’s largest outback town. From Perth, it’s a 6.5-hour drive along the Great Eastern Highway, a one-hour flight or a seven-hour scenic train journey. Kalgoorlie was founded on the hopes and dreams of the fortune seekers who flocked here in the late 1800s, and its grand heritage buildings stand testament to more than a century of gold rush history.  The town has a fascinating past and present, from the region’s gold rush era to epic modern-day mining operations.  The early miners’ legacy lives on at the 3.5-kilometre long and 1.5-kilometre wide Super Pit in nearby Boulder, a mind-blowing mine that produces a staggering 900,000 ounces of gold each year. Kalgoorlie is also known for its vibrant bar, pub and restaurant scene, peppered amongst its historical streetscapes that are just made for strolling.

Heading coast-wards, Esperance is a bucket-list destination for beach and nature-lovers, an isle-wrapped town with an unspoilt coastline rivalling any in the world. Nestled amongst white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, pristine national parks, dramatic rock formations and untouched islands, Esperance is about 8 hours’ drive or a short 90-minute flight from Perth — and this southern gem is worth the trip. Share Australia’s whitest beach, Lucky Bay, with friendly sunbathing kangaroos. It stretches for five peaceful kilometres with a stunning backdrop of the Recherche Archipelago’s 110 islands. Swim, snorkel, fish or four-wheel-drive along the beach. Esperance is surrounded by some of the best beaches in the world — and here, you often have them to yourself. Local favourites include Hellfire Bay, Twilight Beach and Blue Haven. Explore Cape Le Grand National Park to swim, fish, camp or hike, with Frenchman Peak the clear winner for the most spectacular views.
