It’s late Saturday night, and a patron at a busy tavern feels uncomfortable after a group nearby starts making lewd comments aimed directly at her. She quietly approaches the bar and asks for “Angela.” Within moments, trained staff discreetly escort her to a back room, arrange a taxi to take her home, and ensure she’s supported — all without anyone else noticing.
This is how Ask for Angela works, and it’s exactly why it’s so relevant to night-time venues such as pubs, clubs, bars, hotels and entertainment venues.
Originating in the UK in 2016, Ask for Angela is an internationally recognised safety initiative that gives patrons a simple, discreet way to signal they need help. By asking staff for “Angela”, patrons alert trained staff who can respond appropriately, whether that’s escorting them from a risky situation, contacting security, or arranging transport home.
The WA Government, through the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS), is rolling out the program in stages across Western Australia, in partnership with the WA Nightclub Association and the Australian Hotels Association (WA). Phased implementation allows venues and local communities to provide input and ensure the initiative works effectively for different groups, including regional areas.
For employers, Ask for Angela is a safety measure that demonstrates your commitment to patrons and your staff. Night-time venues face unique risks, and having a clear, discreet process helps staff act confidently in situations where someone feels unsafe.
By embedding Ask for Angela into your venue’s culture, you can make nights out safer, protect your patrons, and foster trust in your venue — all while keeping the experience enjoyable and welcoming for everyone.
